San Francisco's best public elementary schools cover a wide range of specialties and are much more diverse than the national average, according to new rankings of California schools from data provider Niche.

Want a peek at the cream of the crop? Take a look at our slideshow of elementary schools that ranked in the top 10 this year for the San Francisco Unified School District. For rankings on Silicon Valley and South Bay schools, please see our coverage later this week.

Niche's methodology via its 2016 Best Public Elementary Schools is an assessment of the overall experience at a public elementary school. It assigns each school a letter grade for its overall ranking.

Niche's grade takes into account key factors such as the strength of academics, quality of teachers, school resources, the quality of student life, as well as student and parent reviews, in an attempt to measure the overall excellence of the school.

At the time of this list's calculation, Niche's database contained records for 53,705 public elementary schools across the United States.
